What is Port Mirroring?

Port mirroring, also known as SPAN (Switched Port Analyzer) in Cisco terminology, is a network feature that replicates packets from specified source ports to a destination port without affecting normal traffic flow .   2. Remote Port Mirroring (RSPAN/ERSPAN): Traffic is mirrored across switches or over Layer 3 networks using a dedicated VLAN or GRE tunnels. Useful for centralized monitoring or backup in larger networks .
  3. VLAN Mirroring: Mirrors all traffic within a specific VLAN to a destination port, simplifying monitoring of segmented traffic .
  4. Two-Switch Mirroring: Coordinated mirroring across two switches for redundancy and scalability .

Configuring Port Mirroring for Backup

  1. Enable privileged mode on the switch and enter global configuration mode .
  2. Select source port(s) to mirror. Multiple ports can be configured as sources.
  3. Specify the destination port where mirrored traffic will be sent. Only one destination port is allowed per mirroring session.
  4. Connect a monitoring or backup device to the destination port. Ensure it is configured to capture or store traffic, using tools like Wireshark or a rolling capture system to manage large data volumes .
  5. Optional: Display mirroring groups to verify configuration.

Best Practices

  • Avoid using uplink or aggregate ports as destination ports, as this can disrupt normal traffic .
