1. Photometer or Spectroradiometer The central instrument is a photometer for measuring light intensity or a spectroradiometer for detailed spectral analysis. These devices can measure illuminance, luminance, and color properties across visible, UV, or infrared ranges depending on the application . Hand-held or benchtop models are available, with NIST-traceable calibration for accuracy . 2. Light Source A stable and well-characterized light source is essential. Depending on the measurement, this could be a tungsten lamp, LED, or laser. For laboratory photometry, black body sources or primary standard radiation sources are often used to ensure precise calibration . 3. Sample Holders or Cuvettes For solution-based measurements, cuvettes made of glass, quartz, or plastic are used to hold the sample. The path length and material must be compatible with the wavelength range of interest. Proper alignment ensures accurate transmission or absorbance readings . 4. Calibration Standards Calibration is critical for reliable results. Neutral density filters, reference solutions, or standard lamps are used to calibrate the photometer and verify linearity and accuracy . 5. Goniometers (for spatial measurements) In photometric laboratories measuring luminaires or lamps, goniometers with movable arms or mirror systems are used to position the light source and detector at precise angles. This allows measurement of luminous flux, intensity distribution, and angular characteristics . 6. Software and Data Acquisition Systems Modern photometering modules include software for controlling the instrument, recording measurements, and performing calculations such as absorbance, transmission, or concentration. Calibration curves and Lambert-Beer law calculations are often integrated .
A complete photometering module combines measurement instruments, controlled light sources, sample holders, calibration standards, and software. For specialized applications like lamp characterization, additional equipment such as goniometers and integrating spheres may be required. Proper setup ensures accurate, reproducible, and traceable photometric measurements .
