Fusion splicing is a permanent method where fiber ends are aligned and fused together using an electric arc. This technique provides the lowest optical loss (typically 0.01 to 0.03 dB per splice) and is ideal for long-distance or high-reliability networks. Fusion splicing requires specialized equipment (fusion splicers) and trained personnel. It is the preferred method for backbone networks and critical installations due to its durability and minimal signal degradation .

4. Factory-Terminated or Pre-Connectorized Cables

Pre-terminated cables come with connectors already attached at the factory. These cables reduce installation time and labor costs while ensuring consistent performance and low optical loss. They are particularly useful in large-scale deployments where speed and reliability are critical. Field termination may still be used when custom lengths or on-site adjustments are required .
