UPS Power Supply System Principle

A UPS provides uninterrupted power by converting AC to DC for storage, then back to AC for output, ensuring seamless supply during mains failure.

Core Principle

The UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) operates on the principle of energy storage and conversion to maintain continuous power to critical loads. It achieves this through four main components: rectifier, energy storage (battery), inverter, and static switch. During normal operation, the rectifier converts AC mains power to DC, which charges the battery and supplies the inverter. The inverter then converts DC back to AC to power the load, ensuring stable voltage and frequency .

Energy Storage and Backup

The battery or energy storage unit acts as an "energy warehouse," storing DC power for use during mains failure. When the input power is interrupted, the UPS instantly draws energy from the battery, feeding it to the inverter. This allows the UPS to provide near-instantaneous power without interruption, typically within milliseconds, which is critical for sensitive equipment like computers, servers, and medical devices .

Inverter Function

The inverter is the core output module that converts DC from the rectifier or battery back into AC with the same voltage and frequency as the mains (e.g., 220V/50Hz). This ensures that connected devices receive consistent and clean power, free from voltage spikes, frequency variations, or noise .

Switching Mechanism

A static switch or automatic transfer mechanism ensures seamless transition between mains and battery power. In online UPS systems, the inverter continuously supplies power, and the battery is always in the loop, providing double-conversion protection. In line-interactive UPS, the inverter is normally in line, and the battery is engaged only when mains fail. In offline/standby UPS, the load is powered directly by mains, and the inverter activates only during power loss .
