Production of Distribution Box Equipment Housings

Distribution box housings are produced through a systematic process involving design, material preparation, cutting, forming, welding, surface treatment, assembly, and quality control to meet electrical and mechanical standards.

Design and Engineering

The production process begins with technical design and digital engineering, using 2D/3D CAD, STEP, and BIM models to simulate structural strength, thermal performance, and airflow for densely loaded panels. Bill of Materials (BOM) is finalized to ensure all components, including steel sheets, locks, hinges, and sealing strips, are accounted for before production begins .

Material Preparation and Cutting

High-quality steel sheets, including cold-rolled or galvanized steel, are cut using CNC laser machines or plasma cutting to achieve precise dimensions and pre-integrated hole patterns for cable entries, vents, and hinges. Material traceability is maintained for quality assurance .

Forming and Bending

Sheets are bent and punched using press brakes and roll forming machines to create the basic enclosure structure. Edge uniformity, door gaps, and hinge placement are carefully controlled. For larger boxes, additional reinforcement bars and hinges are added to maintain mechanical stability .

Welding and Surface Treatment

Welded joints are smoothed and reinforced to prevent dust accumulation and ensure water ingress protection, achieving IP54, IP65, or IP66 ratings. After welding, enclosures undergo grinding, deburring, and surface treatment, including electrostatic powder coating, to ensure uniform color, corrosion resistance, and a clean finish .

Assembly and Electrical Integration

Components such as doors, locks, hinges, and internal mounting plates are assembled. Electrical performance requirements include proper copper bar connections for main and sub-switches, correct wire cross-sections, and loop labeling. The interior is kept free of debris and dust to meet safety and operational standards .

Automation and Production Lines

Modern production lines use automatic uncoilers, straighteners, servo feeders, hydraulic punching, roll forming, and bending machines to achieve high efficiency, producing 2–3 enclosures per minute depending on specifications. PLC control systems allow for automated operation, reducing manual labor and ensuring consistent quality .

Quality Control

Throughout production, inspection and testing are conducted at each stage, including dimensional checks, weld integrity, coating adhesion, and electrical compliance. Documentation is maintained for traceability and client verification .

Installation Considerations

Distribution boxes require careful site preparation, including proper mounting, line routing, and environmental protection. The installation must ensure secure connections, correct orientation, and compliance with relevant electrical standards . By following these steps, manufacturers can produce durable, safe, and compliant distribution box housings suitable for indoor and outdoor applications, including low-voltage switchgear, motor control centers, and solar or battery systems .
