Ghana's indoor distribution boxes have earned a good reputation for reliability, backed by nearly two decades of experience and recognition from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) for providing stable power solutions to residential and commercial clients . These boxes are integral to the last-mile delivery of electricity, ensuring that power is safely and efficiently distributed from the main network to individual consumers.
The performance of indoor distribution boxes is influenced by technical and operational standards set by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission. Regulations such as the Electricity Supply and Distribution (Standards of Performance) Regulations, 2008 (L.I.1935) define benchmarks for electricity supply, including outage frequency and duration, which indirectly reflect the performance of distribution infrastructure, including indoor boxes . Ghana's distribution boxes are designed to meet these standards, contributing to the overall reliability of the electricity network.
Despite their reliability, Ghana's power sector faces technical and commercial losses, which rose from 24% to about 30% between 2014 and 2021 . These losses can affect the efficiency of indoor distribution boxes, particularly in areas with aging infrastructure or high load demand. Additionally, coverage gaps exist in rural areas, where NEDCo operates over 64% of Ghana's geographical area but with lower customer density and electricity access rates around 68% as of June 2023 .
The PURC and Energy Commission play a critical role in monitoring and evaluating the performance of distribution utilities, including the functionality of indoor distribution boxes. They establish key performance indicators, assess operational efficiency, and ensure compliance with technical standards to maintain reliable electricity delivery . This regulatory framework helps maintain the quality and safety of indoor distribution systems across the country.
Overall, indoor distribution boxes in Ghana perform effectively, providing reliable electricity distribution for both urban and rural consumers. While technical losses and infrastructure challenges remain, ongoing regulatory oversight, sector reforms, and infrastructure upgrades continue to enhance their performance and reliability, supporting Ghana's goal of universal electricity access and stable power supply .
