1. Gather Tools and Safety Gear Before starting, ensure you have a sheath knife, needle-nose pliers, scissors, and protective gloves and glasses. Mark the Sheath Removal Length Determine the length of the cable sheath to remove, typically around 6 feet (2 meters) for end access unless otherwise specified by your equipment or local practices . Mark this distance on the outer sheath. 3. Ring Cut the Outer Sheath Use a sheath knife to make a circumferential cut around the cable at the marked point. Make a second ring cut 4–6 inches from the cable end. Be careful not to cut the ripcord or internal strength members . 4. Remove the Sheath Gently flex the cable at the ring cut to separate the sheath. Pull off the cut section to expose the ripcord and cable core. Wrap the ripcord around pliers and pull back to the first ring cut to remove the split sheath completely . 5. Expose the Fiber Core Once the outer sheath is removed, the core consists of color-coded buffer tubes around a central strength member. Carefully remove any binder strings, water-absorbent tape, or flame barrier layers to fully expose the fiber core . 6. Handle Fibers Carefully Trim any excess tape or protective layers with scissors. Avoid bending, twisting, or applying excessive force to the fibers, as this can damage the optical transmission properties . 7. Prepare for Termination or Storage After exposing the core, the fibers can be cleaned, terminated, or spliced according to your project requirements. Cover unused fiber ends with protective caps to prevent contamination or breakage .
