Protection levels of industrial switches

Industrial switches are rated by IP codes for dust and water protection and may include surge protection to safeguard against voltage spikes.

IP Ratings (Ingress Protection)

The IP rating is a standardized measure defined by IEC 60529 that indicates the level of protection an enclosure provides against solid objects and liquids . It consists of two digits following "IP":

  • First digit (0–6): Protection against solids
    • 0: No protection
    • 1: Objects >50 mm (e.g., hands)
    • 2: Objects >12.5 mm (e.g., fingers)
    • 3: Objects >2.5 mm (e.g., tools, wires)
    • 4: Objects >1 mm (e.g., small wires)
    • 5: Dust-protected; limited dust ingress allowed, no harmful effect
    • 6: Dust-tight; no dust ingress
  • Second digit (0–9): Protection against liquids
    • 0: No protection
    • 1: Vertically falling water drops
    • 2: Water drops at 15° angle
    • 3: Spraying water up to 60° angle
    • 4: Splashing water from any direction
    • 5: Water jets from any direction
    • 6: Powerful water jets
    • 7: Temporary immersion (up to 1 m for 30 min)
    • 8: Continuous immersion
    • 9: High-pressure, high-temperature water jets Common industrial switch ratings include:
  • IP65: Dust-tight, protected against water jets
  • IP66: Dust-tight, protected against powerful water jets
  • IP67: Dust-tight, protected against temporary immersion in water

Surge Protection

In addition to physical protection, industrial switches often include surge protection to guard against voltage spikes caused by lightning, power fluctuations, or electromagnetic interference . Surge protection is measured in kilovolts (kV), with common ratings ranging from 2 kV to 8 kV. For example, a switch with a 6 kV surge rating can withstand transient voltage surges without damage, ensuring network reliability and preventing downtime.

Practical Considerations

When selecting industrial switches:

  • Choose an IP rating appropriate for the environment (e.g., IP66 for outdoor or wet areas, IP67 for temporary immersion scenarios).
  • Ensure surge protection matches the expected electrical hazards in the facility.
