Single-fiber modules, often called bidirectional (BiDi) transceivers, transmit and receive data over a single optical fiber by using two different wavelengths. For example, one module may transmit at 1310 nm and receive at 1550 nm, while the module at the other end does the opposite. This allows full-duplex communication over a single fiber, saving space and reducing cabling costs compared to dual-fiber setups .
Although the module itself has a standard optical interface, the fiber cable connected to it has only one end for both transmission and reception. In contrast, dual-fiber modules require two separate fibers: one for transmitting (TX) and one for receiving (RX), effectively giving them two fiber ends .
Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) does not change the number of fiber ends. Instead, it provides real-time monitoring of the module's parameters, such as transmitted and received optical power, temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage. This helps operators detect faults and maintain reliable operation without affecting the single-fiber configuration .
