Application of Fiber Optic Sensors in Lebanon

Lebanon uses fiber optic sensors in telecommunications, agriculture, and defense, including FTTX networks, FOSS4I irrigation systems, and fiber-optic FPV drones.

Telecommunications Applications

Lebanon has been actively deploying fiber-to-the-x (FTTX) networks, which include Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) systems. These networks rely on optical fibers to deliver high-speed internet, with minimum transmission speeds of 50 Mb/s, enabling advanced services like IPTV and video-on-demand. The Ministry of Telecommunications and OGERO initiated this project in 2018, covering both urban and remote areas, and creating infrastructure for private internet service providers to utilize the fiber network .

Agricultural Monitoring

In agriculture, Lebanon participates in the FOSS4I (Fibre Optic Sensor Systems for Irrigation) project, which uses fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors to monitor soil conditions such as temperature and humidity. These sensors are embedded in optical fibers and provide distributed sensing over long distances without requiring electrical power at each sensor point. The system allows farmers to optimize irrigation, conserve water, and improve crop yields. Laboratory and field tests have been conducted to adapt the system to Lebanese soil, particularly its high clay content .

Defense and Security

Fiber optic technology is also applied in defense. Fiber-optic First Person View (FPV) drones have been deployed by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. These drones use a spool of fiber-optic cable to maintain a direct, jam-resistant link between the operator and the drone, allowing precise targeting and real-time visual feedback. The drones are locally manufactured using 3D printing and civilian electronic components, demonstrating a tactical use of fiber optic sensors in military operations .

Types of Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optic sensors in Lebanon include:

  • Intrinsic sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element, detecting changes in strain, temperature, or pressure by modulating light properties such as intensity, phase, or wavelength .
  • Extrinsic sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from an external sensing element, which modulates the light based on the measured quantity .
  • Hybrid sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic elements, allowing the fiber to both carry light and interact with external transducers . These sensors are valued for their immunity to electromagnetic interference, ability to operate in high-voltage or flammable environments, and capability for distributed sensing over long distances, making them suitable for Lebanon's diverse applications in infrastructure, agriculture, and defense .

Summary

In Lebanon, fiber optic sensors are deployed across multiple sectors:

  • Telecommunications: High-speed FTTX networks for internet and data services.
  • Agriculture: FOSS4I project using FBG sensors for soil monitoring and irrigation optimization.
  • Defense: Fiber-optic FPV drones for precise, jam-resistant operations. These applications highlight the versatility of fiber optic sensors in providing real-time monitoring, high accuracy, and long-distance sensing in both civilian and military contexts.
